10 FACTS ABOUT DR.MLK JR. YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Martin Luther King Jr. gave his first sermon in 1946 at the tender age of seventeen at his father’s church. “God isn’t just some distant figure, high on a throne in the sky, God is now. God is in each and everyone of you, you have value, you matter.” –Martin Luther King Jr. (age 17)

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continues to inspire the hearts and minds of people from every walk of life around the world. I find it most interesting that out of the countless essays I have read on the life of Dr. king not one has given us a fact summary; a list of facts that are important to the life of this great American.

TEN FACTS ABOUT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

1.) He was a Republican

2.) He was the youngest person to win the Noble Peace Prize

3.) He gave over 2,500 speeches

4.) He went to jail over thirty times

5.) He logged in over six million travel miles

6.) He predicted there would be a Black man as president within the first part of the 21st century.

7.) He has a U.S. postage stamp in his image; second Black heritage postage stamp issue 1979

8.) His favorite hero as a boy and into adulthood was Dr. George Washington Carver

9.) There are over 1,000 streets named after him

10.) I Have A Dream is the most famous 17 minute speech in American history

 

Fifty years ago Maya Angelou asked Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. if we would ever have a black man as the president of the United States within her life time. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said he believed it would happen in about 50 years, hence President Obama.

I wonder, how he knew?
