My name is Charles Micheaux and I am the CEO of Micheaux Films and Micheaux Publishing Company.
Recently I read an essay in the Michigan Chronicle written by Mr. Jayson Lewis, the name of his essay is:
THREE BLACK FILMMMAKERS in his essay Mr. Lewis suggest Oscar Micheaux would be overwhelmed by the success
of three Black Filmmakers and those filmmakers are:
1.) Spike Lee
2.) Lee Daniels
3.) John Singleton
Now all three of these very talented film directors have proved they know how to make successful movies.
Jayson Lewis failed to honor the scope of Oscar Micheaux for he tried to say in his essay that Oscar Micheaux would be impressed with box office dollars of 100 million dollars. This makes me laugh; the average White filmmaker’s budget today
is 100 million dollars. Mr. Jayson Lewis was raving and boasting of the fact that Lee Daniels new film , THE BUTLER has pulled in almost 90 million dollars. Mr. Jayson Lewis claims Oscar Micheaux would be shocked a Black filmmaker could enjoy such success.
I wrote back to Mr. Jayson Lewis with the facts I know to be true and they are:
Oscar Micheaux was the first Black Best Selling Author in America, Oscar Micheaux was the first independent Black filmmaker in America, Oscar Micheaux was the first Black Movie director that had an international audience.
Oscar Micheaux films have been popular in Germany, Spain, Italy, Amsterdam, Brazil and Russia.
No living or dead Black filmmaker has had an international audience, not one, not Spike Lee, not Lee Daniels, not
No Black filmmaker on the planet earth has an international audience, save Oscar Micheaux.
Oscar Micheaux is the only Black filmmaker that has an international audience, the only one.
The recent Bond film, SKY FALL brought in over ONE BILLION DOLLARS at the box office; it’s production budget
was $200 million dollars. Now, Lee Daniels claims he does not want to be considered a Black filmmaker and so if this is the case
Lee Daniels is not among the greatest American filmmakers, because $ 90 million dollars in box office is not what any one would call Block Buster status, as a matter of fact Lee Daniels would b considered second or third grade director in American films.
Again, Lee Daniels does not have an international audience, Oscar Micheaux did and does.
I explained to Jayson Lewis, Oscar Micheaux was a giant much bigger in scope than he could ever imagine.
Oscar Micheaux would not of been impressed with a paltry $100 million in box office dollars when he, Oscar Micheaux would of been right there with the leading White filmmakers in that $ 500 million dollar status.
I do not mean to snub Lee Daniels or Spike Lee, but one should never, ever compare Oscar Micheaux to these young filmmakers,
OSCAR MICHEAUX HAS NO EQUAL.
