Martin Luther King Jr. Facts You Should Know

“God isn’t just some distant figure, high on a throne in the sky, God is here, God is now. God is in each and everyone of you, you have value, you matter.” –Martin Luther King Jr. ( 17-year old MLK Jr. )

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continues to inspire the hearts and minds of people from every walk of life around the world. I find it most interesting that out of the countless essays I have read on the life of Dr. King not one has given us a fact summary; a list of facts that are important to the life of this great American.

Here are a list of mine:

1.) He was a Republican

2.) He was the youngest person to win the Noble Peace Prize

3.) He gave over 2,500 speeches

4.) He went to jail over thirty times

5.) He logged in over six million travel miles

6.) He predicted there would be a black man as president within the first part of the 21st century; he made this prediction
to Maya Angelou in 1964.

7.) He has a U.S. Postage Stamp in his image; second Black Heritage postage stamp issue 1979.

8.) His favorite hero as a boy and up into adulthood was George Washington Carver.

9.) There are over 1,000 streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in America.

10.) ‘I HAVE A DREAM’ is the most important seventeen minute speech in American history.


In 2013 in a worldwide poll it was discovered that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the most quoted human being in the year 2013. Dr.King’s ‘I HAVE A DREAM ‘ speech is valued at $3.5 million dollars; a speech he gave to a man named
George Raveling whom he did not know.
