40 ACRES & A MULE…WHAT HAPPENED?

“No man is good enough to govern another man without the other’s consent.”
–Abraham Lincoln

So, whatever happened to the promise of Forty Acres & a Mule?
Why was the promise made in the first place?
One of the greatest generals in all of American history named William T. Sherman called
together twenty Black leaders from the city of Savannah, Georgia and he asked them what they
needed going forward now that they were free. The Black leaders all said it was land, they wanted.

On Janurary 12th 1865 General William T. Sherman prescribed 40 Acres; this order was issued as
Special Field Order Number 15.

Indeed General Sherman followed true to his promise and the blacks were given 40 acres; there was never
an offer of a mule.

On April 16th, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a confederate, racist.
Upon President Lincoln’s death Andrew Johnson took over as President of the United States and in 1869
President Andrew Johnson rescinded Special Order Number 15 which gave 40 acre plots to newly freed slaves.

A final thought:
The most powerful word a newly elected president can use is …rescind.
